Those of us who are self-conscious about our smiles often think about getting a smile makeover. The good news is that there are many treatments out there that can improve the look of our teeth and gums.

Choosing the right one all depends on what kind of problems your teeth and gums have. No matter the situation with your smile, there is a dental procedure that can give you a big, beautiful smile.

Popular smile makeover procedures

1. Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is a popular way to remove surface stains from teeth. And for intrinsic stains like tetracycline stains or dental fluorosis, deep bleaching treatments can be used to remove the stains that are embedded deep inside the enamel.

Teeth whitening can be done at home using over the counter or prescription teeth whitening products. It can also be done by a dental professional. To ensure an even, bright smile, it is always best to seek advice from the dentist.

2. Dental bonding

Dental bonding removes slight imperfections in the teeth. Bonding can help correct chipped, cracked, crooked, gapped, decayed or mildly discolored teeth. It is done by applying dental resin which is a semi-solid, tooth-colored substance, to the tooth in need of repair.

The resin can be used to coat a stained tooth or to fill a cavity. It can be sculpted onto a chipped or crooked tooth to reshape it. The resin can also be applied and sculpted onto teeth to increase their size and to close the gaps between them.

Dental bonding is a simple, affordable non-invasive procedure that only takes about 30 minutes at the dentist's office.

3. Dental veneers

A veneer is a thin porcelain shell that is custom made to fit onto a tooth that needs restoration. It is often used to conceal stains, discoloration or chipping. Veneers are also used to reshape slightly crooked teeth.

Dental veneers are bonded to the surface of a tooth with dental cement. Dental veneers last for reasonably long time. If cared for, they can last upwards of ten years. However, they are only meant to restore teeth that are slightly damaged.

4. Dental crowns

Dental crowns are used to restore teeth with significant damage. Not only do they make the tooth look good, but crowns also protect what remains of the natural tooth from exposure to harmful bacteria and injury.

For a dental crown to be fitted, the tooth is prepared by scraping away a layer of enamel to enable the crown to adhere to the tooth. Dental cement is then applied to the tooth's surface and the crown's inner surface. The crown is then placed on the tooth, effectively encasing it.

Dental crowns are a very permanent tooth restoration treatment. With the right oral habits, dental crowns can last a lifetime.

5. Dental implants

Implants are a lifetime investment with lifelong benefits. They improve a person's smile by filling the gaps left by missing teeth. Dental implants function and look just like natural teeth. They promote a person's smile and allow a person to chew, brush and floss just like they would if they had all their natural teeth.

Implants are meant for healthy people with healthy teeth, healthy jawbones, and bodies that heal fast.

The implants are placed in the jaw, where they are allowed to fuse with the jawbone. Later on, an abutment is attached to the 'artificial root' or implant. The abutment is meant to connect the 'root' to the dental crown. Finally, a dental crown is attached to the abutment, which completes the process of installing an implant-supported crown.

The implant-supported crown is an artificial tooth that lasts for the rest of a person's life. It is well worth the multiple procedures needed to install it.
