Impact of Pregnancy on Oral Health

Good oral health is extremely important for pregnant women and their developing babies. Pregnant women need to take care of their teeth and gums to prevent cavities and infections from spreading to their growing baby. Here are a few ways to maintain good oral health while pregnant:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
  • Floss daily to remove food particles and plaque from your gum line and between teeth.
  • Rinse with a fluoride mouthwash to reduce bacteria, prevent tooth decay, and treat gingivitis.
  • Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight. This will help reduce the risk of gum disease and other pregnancy-related complications.
  • Schedule regular checkups and cleanings during your pregnancy. This will give your dental health provider a chance to monitor your oral health and make recommendations as needed.

If you’re experiencing any abnormal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, ulcers, dry mouth, or other problems with your mouth, contact your dental care provider right away. Your dentist may prescribe medications to treat your symptoms and reduce the risk of further oral health issues.

Oral Health and Pregnancy

Some pregnant women also report that their teeth are more sensitive than usual, so they should be sure to brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and to floss carefully to avoid painful gums. If sensitivity occurs, use sensitive toothpaste and speak to your dentist about other treatments that may be beneficial.

Most pregnant women will experience some degree of gingivitis during their pregnancy, as hormonal changes increase bacteria in the mouth and cause inflammation of the gums. It is important to protect yourself and your baby against the risk of tooth decay by maintaining a consistent oral hygiene regimen that includes brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash, and avoiding sticky foods and beverages that can cause damage to the teeth.
